Shipwrecks and Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band

Let me preface by saying I don’t like people dying on a sinking ship. (Who does? Except maybe James Cameron. He’d have a lot less money if the Titanic never sank.) With that said, I love a good (olde timey) shipwreck story. There was a while when I thought I might go into marine geology with the hopes I could work with marine archeologists on a shipwrecks.  Sort of Indiana Jones-y. But a girl. And on a boat

Sort of like this. (Even those this actually Paleontologist Barbie, not Marine Geologist Barbie)

It’s the mystery that really gets me. How did it sink? Is it really <insert famous sea captain/pirate> ship? Is there gold?  What happened?? You can’t write these stories. Well, you can, there are lots of shipwreck mysteries out there (I’m reading one right now), but they aren’t as good as the real thing. (Unless, of course, the boat clearly hit a rock, there wasn’t any treasure, and everyone made it safely to shore.  Then the fiction might be better.)

I think part of the reason shipwrecks are so intriguing is because they are so far removed from my life. . I’ve never sailed off into the wild blue yonder not knowing I’ll come back.  I’ve been on my fair share of boats, but I’ve never had to watch for cannon fire or wonder if the boat was going to be commandeered at some point on the trip

Hot jam of the week is Nikorette by Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. I'm not totally sure why I like this song. Is it the simple rhyme scheme? The rollicking rhythm? Maybe. Maybe something else. I was never a big fan of Bright Eyes (What Conor is most famous for) - a little too emo even for my emo phase in high school. But I'm a big fan of CO and the MVB because it's more "Let's have a beer" kind of music, rather than the sound track to your black and pink Myspace page.
